This article presents two streams, such as generic concerns and specific concerns, which are suggested by Allenby for environmental aspects of design. It discusses the generic concerns and presents guidelines that provide the structure in which specific techniques can be developed and used. The article provides information on specific methods environmentally responsible for design and specific information that engineers can use. The methods include life cycle assessment, environmental impact assessment, quality function deployment, design for “X”, failure modes and effects analysis, and design for disassembly.
