Abstract

This chapter focuses on the spheroidization of the cementite plates of pearlite, and of proeutectoid cementite, in normalized and annealed steels by heating at subcritical temperatures. The discussion covers the basic characteristics of lamellar pearlite, the effects of plastic deformation on both the mechanism and the kinetics of spheroidization prior to heating, and the effects of plastic deformation on the spheroidization of pearlite at subcritical temperatures. The development of a spheroidal structure in the proeutectoid cementite following partial austenitization is described. The chapter also discusses the processes involved in graphitization commenced in the steel at subcritical temperatures and during austenitizing treatments.
