This chapter focuses on the structures of annealed and normalized steels containing up to about 0.25% carbon. The discussion covers the effect of carbon content on the characteristics of proeutectoid ferrite, proeutectoid cementite, and pearlite in annealed steels of higher carbon contents. Some features of the structures of these basic constituents are considered and the effects of plastic deformation in ferrite and pearlite are provided. In addition, the chapter describes some special features of patented wires, cast steels, and sintered steels. It also provides information on the morphology of the manganese sulfide inclusions in cast ingots.
