Abstract
Brief overheating of the 89 mm OD 6.4 mm wall thickness titanium heater tubes (ASTM B337, grade 2) was caused by a flow stoppage in a leach heater. Blue-tinted areas and patches of flaky white, yellow, and brown oxide scale was revealed on visual examination. It was disclosed by subjecting the overheated tube to a flattening test that the tube no longer met ASTM B 337 specifications. Large grain size and numerous needlelike hydride particles were disclosed in the microstructure of the overheated tube. Heating to approximately 815 deg C was revealed by the presence of the flaky oxide and increased grain size. Hydrogen and oxygen absorption was revealed by the presence of hydrides and the shallow surface embrittlement and thus susceptibility to cracking at ambient temperatures was observed. It was concluded that the titanium tubes were embrittled due to overheating the tubes and the severe surface embrittlement resulted from oxygen absorption which made the surface layers susceptible to cracking under start up and shutdown. Replacement tubes made of a heat-resistant alloy (e.g., Hastelloy C-276) were recommended.

Abstract
With any polymeric material, chemical exposure may have one or more different effects. Some chemicals act as plasticizers, changing the polymer from one that is hard, stiff, and brittle to one which is softer, more flexible, and sometimes tougher. Often these chemicals can dissolve the polymer if they are present in large enough quantity and if the polymer is not crosslinked. Other chemicals can induce environmental stress cracking (ESC), an effect in which brittle fracture of a polymer will occur at a level of stress well below that required to cause failure in the absence of the ESC reagent. Finally, there are some chemicals that cause actual degradation of the polymer, breaking the macromolecular chains, reducing molecular weight, and diminishing polymer properties as a result. This article examines each of these effects. The discussion also covers the effects of surface embrittlement and temperature on polymer performance.

Abstract
The first-stage blades in a model 501D5 gas turbine had 16 cooling holes. After 32,000 h of service, the blades exhibited cracking at the cooling holes. The blade material was wrought Udimet 520 alloy, with nominal composition of 57Ni-19Cr-12Co-6Mo-1W-2Al-3Ti-0.05C-0.005B. The cooling holes' surface was not coated. Investigation supported the conclusions that the cracking at the cooling holes was due to grain-boundary oxidation and nitridation at the cooling hole surface, embrittlement and loss of local ductility of the base alloy, temperature gradient from the airfoil surface to the cooling holes, which led to relatively high thermal stresses at the holes located at the thicker sections of the airfoil, and stress concentration of 2.5 at the cooling hole and the presence of relatively high total strain (an inelastic strain of 1.2%) at the cooling hole surface. Recommendations include applying the specially designed methods given in this case study to estimate the metal temperature and stresses in order to predict the life of turbine blades under similar operating conditions.

Abstract
During an inspection of a structure two weeks after assembly, the heads of several cadmium-plated AISI 8740 steel fasteners were found to be completely separated from their respective shanks. SEM examination of the fracture surfaces revealed a brittle, intergranular fracture mode, indicating hydrogen embrittlement. An investigation was conducted to determine the extent of hydrogen embrittlement in the various lots of cadmium-plated 8740 steel fasteners. It was found that hydrogen embrittlement was caused by the use of a bright, impervious cadmium electroplate that hindered diffusion of mobile hydrogen outward from the surface of the pin. After the cadmium layer was removed, the mobile hydrogen contained on the surface of the steel and in the electroplated deposit was released, and the embrittlement problem was alleviated. To prevent reoccurrence, the bright cadmium layer was stripped from the pins, which were then baked and repeated with a dull, porous cadmium layer that allowed outward diffusion of hydrogen. The pins were baked again after deposition of the porous cadmium layer. This eliminated the problem.

Metal-induced embrittlement is a phenomenon in which the ductility or the fracture stress of a solid metal is reduced by surface contact with another metal in either the liquid or solid form. This article summarizes some of the characteristics of liquid-metal- and solid-metal-induced embrittlement. This phenomenon shares many of these characteristics with other modes of environmentally induced cracking, such as hydrogen embrittlement and stress-corrosion cracking. The discussion covers the occurrence, failure analysis, and service failures of the embrittlement. The article also briefly reviews some commercial alloy systems in which liquid-metal-induced embrittlement or solid-metal-induced embrittlement has been documented and describes some examples of cracking due to these phenomena, either in manufacturing or in service.

Metal-induced embrittlement is a phenomenon in which the ductility or fracture stress of a solid metal is reduced by surface contact with another metal in either liquid or solid form. This article summarizes the characteristics of solid metal induced embrittlement (SMIE) and liquid metal induced embrittlement (LMIE). It describes the unique features that assist in arriving at a clear conclusion whether SMIE or LMIE is the most probable cause of the problem. The article briefly reviews some commercial alloy systems where LMIE or SMIE has been documented. It also provides some examples of cracking due to these phenomena, either in manufacturing or in service.

Abstract
The causes of cracking of an as-drawn 90-10 cupronickel tube during mechanical working were investigated to determine the source of embrittlement. Embrittlement was sporadic, but when present was typically noted after the first process anneal. Microstructural and chemical analyses were performed on an embrittled section and on a section from a different lot that did not crack during forming. The failed section showed an intergranular fracture path. Examination of the fracture surfaces revealed the presence of tellurium at the grain boundaries. The source of the tellurium was thought to be contamination occurring in the casting process that became concentrated in the recycled skimmings. It was recommended that future material specifications for skimmings and for externally obtained scrap copper include a trace analysis for tellurium.

Abstract
A 75 mm OD x 7.4 mm wall thickness carbon steel boiler tube ruptured. A substantial degree of corrosion on the water-side surface leaving a rough area in the immediate vicinity of the rupture was revealed by visual examination. Decarburization and extensive discontinuous intergranular cracking was revealed by microscopic examination of a cross section through the tube wall at the fracture. It was concluded that the rupture occurred because of hydrogen damage involving the formation of methane by the reaction of dissolved hydrogen with carbon in the steel. Hydrogen was produced by the chemical reaction that corroded the internal tube surface. Steel embrittled by hydrogen can be restored only if grain boundary cracking or decarburization had not occurred but since the material embrittled in this manner, its replacement was recommended.

A bracket which formed part of the carrier of a chain conveyor system used to transport components through a continuous oven fractured. A brittle crack originated on the inside of the right-angled bend, the surface having oxidized subsequently. The remaining portion of the fracture resulted from fatigue. Shallow oxidized regions adjacent to the inside surface of the bend indicated pre-existing cracks. A sulphur print on the edge of the bracket showed the material was rolled from a rimming steel ingot. The general appearance of the fracture, and the fact failure took place where embrittlement had developed following plastic straining and service at a temperature of 260 deg C (500 deg F) suggested that failure resulted from strain-age embrittlement.

Abstract
The draw-in bolt and collet from a vertical-spindle milling machine broke during routine cutting of blind recesses after a relatively long service life. The collet ejected at a high rotational speed due to loss of its vertical support and shattered one of its arms upon impact with the work table. SEM fractography and metallographic examinations conducted on the bolt revealed hairline indications along grain facets on the fracture surface and stepwise cracking in the material, both indicating failure by hydrogen embrittlement. Similar draw-in bolts were discarded and replaced with bolts manufactured using controlled processes.

Abstract
This article provides an overview of the classification of hydrogen damage. Some specific types of the damage are hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen-induced blistering, cracking from precipitation of internal hydrogen, hydrogen attack, and cracking from hydride formation. The article focuses on the types of hydrogen embrittlement that occur in all the major commercial metal and alloy systems, including stainless steels, nickel-base alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys, titanium and titanium alloys, copper and copper alloys, and transition and refractory metals. The specific types of hydrogen embrittlement discussed include internal reversible hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen environment embrittlement, and hydrogen reaction embrittlement. The article describes preservice and early-service fractures of commodity-grade steel components suspected of hydrogen embrittlement. Some prevention strategies for design and manufacturing problem-induced hydrogen embrittlement are also reviewed.

Hydrogen damage is a term used to designate a number of processes in metals by which the load-carrying capacity of the metal is reduced due to the presence of hydrogen. This article introduces the general forms of hydrogen damage and provides an overview of the different types of hydrogen damage in all the major commercial alloy systems. It covers the broader topic of hydrogen damage, which can be quite complex and technical in nature. The article focuses on failure analysis where hydrogen embrittlement of a steel component is suspected. It provides practical advice for the failure analysis practitioner or for someone who is contemplating procurement of a cost-effective failure analysis of commodity-grade components suspected of hydrogen embrittlement. Some prevention strategies for design and manufacturing problem-induced hydrogen embrittlement are also provided.

An AISI 4340 Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steel draw-in bolt and the collet from a vertical-spindle milling machine broke during routine cutting of blind recesses after relatively long service life. Based on fracture surface features, it was suspected that the draw-in bolt was the first to fracture, followed by failure of the collet, which shattered one of its arms when it struck the work table. Scanning electron microscopy showed the presence of hairline crack indications along grain facets on the fracture surface of the bolt. This, coupled with stepwise cracking in the material, generally raised suspicion of hydrogen embrittlement. It appeared that fracture in service progressed transgranularly to produce delayed failure under dynamic loading. The pickling process used to remove heat scale was suspected to be the source of hydrogen on the surface of the bolt. The manufacturer was requested to change its cleaning practice from pickling to grit blasting.

Abstract
Several cases of embrittlement failure are analyzed, including liquid-metal embrittlement (LME) of an aluminum alloy pipe in a natural gas plant, solid metal-induced embrittlement (SMIE) of a brass valve in an aircraft engine oil cooler, LME of a cadmium-plated steel screw from a crashed helicopter, and LME of a steel gear by a copper alloy from an overheated bearing. The case histories illustrate how LME and SMIE failures can be diagnosed and distinguished from other failure modes, and shed light on the underlying causes of failure and how they might be prevented. The application of LME as a failure analysis tool is also discussed.
