Abstract
Military aircraft use a cartridge ignition system for emergency engine starts. Analysis of premature failures of steel (AISI 4340) breech chambers in which the solid propellant cartridges were burned identified corrosion as one problem with an indication that stress-corrosion cracking may have occurred. A study was made for stress-corrosion cracking susceptibility of 4340 steel in a paste made of the residues collected from used breech chambers. The constant extension rate test (CERT) technique was employed and SCC susceptibility was demonstrated. The residues, which contained both combustion products from the cartridges and corrosion products from the chamber, were analyzed using elemental analysis and x-ray diffraction techniques. Electrochemical polarization techniques were also utilized to estimate corrosion rates.

Abstract
Failure of a case hardened steel shaft incorporated fuel pump in a turbine-powered aircraft resulted in damage to the aircraft. The disassembled pump was found to be dry and free of any contamination. Damage was exhibited on the pressure side of each spline tooth in the impeller and the relatively smooth cavities and undercutting of the flank on this side indicated that the damage was caused by an erosion or abrasion mechanism. A relatively smooth worn area was formed at the center of each tooth due to an abrasive action and an undulating outline with undercutting was observed on the damaged side. Particles of sand, paint, or plastic, fibers from the cartridge, brass, and steel were viewed in the brown residue on the filter cartridge under a low power microscope and later confirmed by chemical analysis. Large amount of iron was identified by application of a magnet. It was concluded that the combined effect of vibration and abrasive wear by sand and metal particles removed from the splines damaged the shaft. Case hardened spline teeth surface was recommended to increase resistance to wear and abrasion.

Abstract
An articulated rod (made from 4337 steel (AMS 6412) forging, quenched and tempered to 36 to 40 HRC) used in an overhauled aircraft engine was fractured after being in operation for 138 h. Visual examination revealed that the rod was broken into two pieces 6.4 cm from the center of the piston-pin-bushing bore. The fracture was nucleated at an electroetched numeral 5 on one of the flange surfaces. A notch, caused by arc erosion during electroetching, was revealed by metallographic examination of a polished-and-etched section through the fracture origin. A remelted zone and a layer of untempered martensite constituted the microstructure of the metal at the origin. Small cracks, caused by the high temperatures developed during electro-etching, were observed in the remelted area. It was concluded that fatigue fracture of the rod was caused by the notch resulting from electroetching and thus electroetched marking of the articulated rods was discontinued as a corrective measure.

Abstract
A broken aircraft crankshaft and a severely damaged main brass bearing were examined to determine whether engine failure was initiated in the bearing or in the crankshaft. The steel crankshaft failure was a classical fatigue fracture. The bearing had been subjected to extremely high temperatures, as indicated by melting in the brass components and the extreme distortion in the rollers. Microscopic examination on the crankshaft material showed it to be a good quality steel. On the other hand, the chromium plate was thick, porous, and cracked in many places, including the point of the main fatigue crack. It was concluded that the over-all failure was initiated in the crankshaft, and the failure of the bearing resulted from that failure.

Abstract
Cylinder fatigue can result from abnormal heating in service. Fatigue can be experienced also by piston heads, exhaust valves, and turbosupercharger housings (castings). Pistons from different engines series can sometimes fit, but because of slight design modifications, they may not function properly. Circumferential cracks and fractures near the head-to- barrel junctions have occurred on numerous cylinders of reciprocating piston engines. In most instances, cracks were caused by high cyclic pressures and high temperatures resulting most probably from detonation. At times, fractures or cracks (or both) were also caused by a combination of unfavorable temperature distribution (and possibly excessive pressures around the cylinder barrel), un-nitrided internal surfaces of cylinder barrels, and inadequate thread contours, which caused high stress concentrations at the thread roots. One example of the most common type of cylinder failure is illustrated.

Abstract
Thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) refers to the process of fatigue damage under simultaneous changes in temperature and mechanical strain. This article reviews the process of TMF with a practical example of life assessment. It describes TMF damages caused due to two possible types of loading: in-phase and out-of-phase cycling. The article illustrates the ways in which damage can interact at high and low temperatures and the development of microstructurally based models in parametric form. It presents a case study of the prediction of residual life in a turbine casing of a ship through stress analysis and fracture mechanics analyses of the casing.

Abstract
The cause of low fatigue life measurements obtained during routine fatigue testing of IMI 550 titanium alloy compressor blades used in the first stage of the high-pressure compressor of an aeroengine was investigated. The origin of the fatigue cracks was associated with a spherical bead of metal sticking to the blade surface in each case. Scanning electron microscope revealed that the cracks initiated at the point of contact of the bead with the blade surface. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis indicated that the bead composition was the same as that of the blade. Detailed investigation revealed that fused material from the blade had been thrown onto the cold blade surface during a grinding operation to remove the targeting bosses from the forgings, thereby causing local embrittlement. It was recommended that extreme care be taken during grinding operations to prevent the hot, fused particles from striking the blade surface.

Abstract
Several compressor disks in military fighter and trainer aircraft gas turbine engines cracked prematurely in the bolt hole regions. The disks were made of precipitation-hardened AM355 martensitic stainless steel. Experimental and analytical work was performed on specimens from the fifth-stage compressor disk (judged to be the most crack-prone disk in the compressor) to determine the cause of the failures. Failure was attributed to high-strain low-cycle fatigue during service. It was also determined that the cyclic engine usage assumed in the original life calculations had been under estimated, which led to low-cycle fatigue cracking earlier than expected. Fracture mechanics analysis of the disks was carried out to assess their damage tolerance and to predict safe inspection intervals.
