The development of ASM Handbook, Volume 23A, Additive Manufacturing in Biomedical Applications published by ASM International is in response to the burgeoning use of additive manufacturing (AM) technology in the biomedical field. What began as a technology to create 3D models and objects has been evolving for years into a major revolution that now is at the absolute forefront of modern manufacturing today.

Volume 23A follows the publication of ASM Handbook, Volume 23, Materials for Medical Devices. Volume 23A is devoted to biomedical applications produced by additive manufacturing processes. It describes various aspects of 3D printing used in the biomedical industry and illustrates how AM technology assists doctors and scientists in processes and procedures before, during, and after surgical and medical procedures. The Volume includes three divisions that each address polymer, ceramic, and metal AM processes in biomedical applications. In addition, there are articles on medical and dental device creation and tissue engineering.

Volume editor Dr. Roger J. Narayan is a professor at the University of North Carolina (UNC)/North Carolina State University (NCSU) joint department of biomedical engineering. Dr. Narayan gathered the foremost subject matter experts worldwide to author and peer review articles for this significant and valuable new ASM Handbook Volume. With the tremendous effort of these most experienced and knowledgeable contributors, this Volume will be a groundbreaking resource for years to come.
