Abstract

Cold extrusion is typically used to create near-net-shape products, such as fasteners and automotive components. Aluminum alloys are well suitable to cold (impact) extrusion. This article describes the tooling, dies, punches, and tool materials of equipment used for cold extrusion. Typical tool materials and their working hardnesses for the extrusion of aluminum are presented. The article reviews the preparation of aluminum slugs in terms of tolerance on slug volume, surface preparation, and lubricants. It concludes with a discussion on extruded parts, such as shallow cup-like parts, deep cup-like parts, and parts with complex shapes.
