To maximize the mechanical properties of Ni-base superalloys, solution heat treatment is essential to sufficiently homogenize the dendritic segregations formed during solidification. To investigate the homogenization behavior during solution heat treatment, a Ni-base single crystal superalloy, TMS-238, was heat treated under various conditions; temperatures ranging from 1573 to 1613 K for times ranging from 2 to 100 h. After solution heat treatment, the average concentrations of Re, an element that exhibits the highest degree of segregation, in dendrite core and inter-dendritic regions were analyzed. From these results, apparent diffusion constants, D app , were determined based on a proposed homogenization model. Obtained D app values were significantly smaller than the diffusion constant of Re in Ni, strongly suggesting that the apparent diffusion coefficients should be obtained experimentally when using the target alloy.

Titanium alloys are expected to be used as heat-resisting structural materials in the airplane and automotive industries. In this study, the creep properties of near-α Ti alloys consisting of a lamellar microstructure were studied. Ti–8.5wt%Al–8.0wt%Zr–2wt%Mo–1wt%Nb–0.15wt%Si alloy (alloy code, TKT34) and an alloy with 0.1 wt% of added boron (alloy code, TKT35) were used in this study. An ingot was hot forged at a temperature of 1,403 K and hot rolled (caliberrolling) at a temperature of 1,273 K to a reduction rate of approximately 90%. It then underwent solution treatment in a β single-phase region followed by air cooling. Finally, it was subjected to aging treatment for 28.3 ks at a temperature of 863 K and then air-cooled. Two solution treatment conditions were applied: a time of 1.8 ks at a temperature of 1,323 K (high temperature/short time (HS)) and a time of 3.6 ks at a temperature of 1,223 K (low temperature/long time (LL)). The average grain size of the prior β grains showed a tendency of the solution treatment temperature being low and the boron-added alloys tending to be small. The length and thickness of the lamellar of these alloys shortened or thinned owing to the addition of boron and at a low solution treatment temperature. The creep tests were carried out at an applied stress of 137 MPa and a temperature of 923 K in air. The creep rupture life of these alloys was excellent, in order of TKT35 (LL) < TKT34 (LL) < TKT35 (HS) ≦ TKT34 (HS). Therefore, the creep rupture life of these alloys was shown to be superior under the HS solution treatment condition as compared to the LL solution treatment condition. However, the minimum or steady-state strain rate of these alloys became slower in order of TKT 35 (LL)> TKT34 (LL)> TKT34 (HS) ≧ TKT35 (HS). The creep properties depended on the microstructure of the alloys.

Effects of Ni content and heat treatment condition on impact toughness and creep strength of precipitation strengthened 15Cr ferritic steels were investigated in order to discuss a possibility of improvement in both mechanical properties. Both creep strength and impact toughness of the developing steels were improved drastically by solid solution treatment with water quenching. However, an addition of Ni reduced the long-term creep strength of the steels, though Ni was effective in improvement in impact toughness. It was found that water quenching suppressed formation of coarse block type particles and precipitate free zones around them, and precipitation of plate type fine particles and thermal stability of them within ferrite phase were promoted by solid solution treatment with water quenching. However, martensite phase with sparsely distributed coarse block type particles were formed in the Ni added steels, and such microstructure reduced the precipitation strengthening effect slightly. On the other hand, increase in impact values of the steel indicated no relation to volume fraction of martensite phase. It was supposed that the impact toughness of ferrite phase itself was improved by solid solution treatment and addition of Ni.

In order to establish a induction bending technique for Ni-based alloy HR6W large pipe, induction bending test was conducted on HR6W, which is a piping candidate material of 700°C class Advanced Ultra-Super Critical. In this study, a tensile bending test in which tensile strain was applied and a compression bending test in which compression strain was applied to the extrados side of the pipe bending part. As the results of these two types of induction bending tests, it was confirmed that a predetermined design shape could be satisfied in both bending tests. In addition, the wall thickness of the pipe was equal to or greater than that of the straight pipe section in compression bending. Therefore, if compression bending is used, it is considered unnecessary to consider the thinning amount of the bent portion in the design. Next, penetrant test(PT) on the outer surface of the bending pipes were also confirmed to be acceptable. Subsequently, metallographic samples were taken from the outer surface of the extrados side, neutral side and intrados side of the pipe bending portion. Metallographic observation confirmed that the microstructures were normal at all the three selected positions. After induction bending, the pipe was subjected to solution treatment. Thereafter, tensile tests and creep rupture tests were carried out on samples that were cut from the extrados side, neutral side and intrados side of the pipe bending portion. Tensile strength satisfied the minimum tensile strength indicated in the regulatory study for advanced thermal power plants report of Japan. Each creep rupture strength was the almost same regardless of the solution treatment conditions. From the above, it was possible to establish a induction bending technique for HR 6W large piping.

Microstructural change of 10 % Cr steel trial forgings subjected to different heat treatment conditions which aim to improve the creep rupture strength and microstructural stability during creep was investigated. Creep rupture strength of the forging subjected to the quality heat treatment with the austenitizing temperature of 1090° C is higher than that of the forging solution treated at 1050°C, however, the difference of creep rupture strength is reduced in the long-term region around 40,000 h. Decrease in creep rupture ductility of the forging until 43,300 h is not observed. Progress of the martensite lath recovery in the forging solution-treated at 1090°C is slower than that in the forging austenitized at 1050°C. Higher temperature solution treatment suppresses the recovery of lath structures. Formations of Z-phase are found in the specimens creep-ruptured at 37,300 h in the forging solution-treated at 1050°C and at 43,400 h in the forging austenitized at 1090°C. Z-phase precipitation behavior in this steel is delayed in comparison with the boiler materials, regardless of austenitizing temperature.

The effect of grain size after solution treatment on the mechanical properties of FENIX-700, including its cooling rate, was investigated. In addition, the dependance of precipitation observed at grain boundaries on the heat treatment conditions was also discussed on the basis of the results of microstructure observations. It was confirmed that the tensile ductility, the creep rupture ductility, and the absorbed energy decreased as the grain size increased. The creep rupture strength, in contrast, increased remarkably as the grain size increased. The tensile strength increased as the cooling rate increased. Experimental results showed that satisfactory mechanical properties would be obtained for a grain size of ASTM G.S.No. 1.0-3.0.

For the safe operation of high temperature equipment, it is necessary to ensure creep rupture ductility of the components from the viewpoint of notch weakening. In this study, the effect of heat treatment conditions on creep rupture ductility was evaluated and its underlying metallurgical mechanism was investigated with using a forged Ni-based superalloy Udimet520. In order to improve the creep rupture ductility without lowering the creep rupture strength, it is important to increase both intragranular strength and intergranular strength in a balanced manner. For this purpose, it was clarified that 1) secondary γ' phase within grains should be kept fine and dense, 2) grain boundaries should be sufficiently covered by M 23 C 6 carbide by increasing its phase fraction, and 3) tertiary γ' phase within grains should be redissolved before the start of creep. To obtain such a precipitate state, it is essential to appropriately select the cooling rate after solution treatment, stabilizing treatment and aging treatment conditions.

Alloy 718 is one of the most useful heat-resistant alloys for important device components that require high-temperature properties. In order to obtain excellent mechanical properties, it is necessary to form fine grains, for which the pinning effect of the δ phase can be used in some cases. To precipitate a sufficient amount for the pinning effect, time-consuming isothermal heat treatments are required. Thus, a metallurgical method with a shortened holding time would improve production efficiency considerably. Our goal is to optimize the forging process to control grain size by utilizing the δ phase, and the purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the initial microstructure of the precipitated γ″ phase on δ-phase precipitation behavior in Alloy 718. As a solute treatment, Alloy 718 was heated at 1050 °C for 4 h, followed by heating of some samples at 870 °C for 10 h to precipitate the γ″ phase. The specimen with precipitated γ″ phase showed more precipitated δ phase than that under the solute condition by comparing results of heating at 915 °C. This suggested that utilizing the γ″ phase promoted δ-phase precipitation, and it is thus expected to shorten the heat treatment time for δ-phase precipitation.

So-called Ni base dual two-phase intermetallic alloys are composed of primary Ni 3 Al (L1 2 ) phase precipitates among eutectoid microstructures consisting of the Ni 3 Al and Ni 3 V (D0 22 ) phases. In this article, microstructural refinement of an alloy with a nominal composition of Ni 75 Al 10 V 15 (in at.%) was attempted by various heat treatment processes. When the alloy was continuously cooled down after solution treatment, fine and cuboidal Ni 3 Al precipitates were developed by rapid cooling while coarse, rounded and coalesced Ni 3 Al precipitates were developed by slow cooling. When the alloy was isothermally annealed at temperatures above the eutectoid temperature, the morphology of the Ni 3 Al precipitates changed from fine and cuboidal one to large and rounded one with increase in annealing time. When the alloy was annealed at temperatures below the eutectoid temperature, the Ni 3 Al precipitates were grown keeping cuboidal morphology. The morphological change from the cuboidal to rounded Ni 3 Al precipitates was induced by the transition from the growth driven by elastic interaction energy between the precipitate and matrix to that by the surface energy of the precipitate. Fine and cuboidal Ni 3 Al precipitates generally resulted in high hardness.

Hitachi and Hitachi Metals have developed low thermal expansion Ni-base superalloy, Ni-20Cr-10Mo-1.2Al-1.6Ti alloy (USC141) for use as A-USC steam turbine material. The approximate 10 5 h creep rupture strength at 740° C is 100MPa, so USC141 can be expected to apply for blades and bolts. Now we have been studying to get better creep properties by microstructure controlling such as grain size or grain boundary morphology. In addition, the segregation test of USC141 shows good Freckle tendencies, it means that it would be easy to make a large ingot which could be used as rotors or pipes. From these calculation results, we have been tried to make an 850mmϕ ESR ingot of USC141.

A global movement is pushing for improved efficiency in power plants to reduce fossil fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions. While raising operating temperatures and pressures can enhance thermal efficiency, it necessitates materials with exceptional high-temperature performance. Currently, steels used in power plants operating up to 600°C achieve efficiencies of 38-40%. Advanced Ultra Supercritical (A-USC) designs aim for a significant leap, targeting steam temperatures of 700°C and pressures of 35 MPa with a lifespan exceeding 100,000 hours. Ni-based superalloys are leading candidates for these extreme conditions due to their superior strength and creep resistance. Haynes 282, a gamma prime (γ′) precipitation-strengthened alloy, is a promising candidate for A-USC turbine engines, exhibiting excellent creep properties and thermal stability. This research investigates the microstructural evolution in large, sand-cast components of Haynes 282. Microstructure, referring to the arrangement of grains and phases within the material, significantly impacts its properties. The research examines the alloy in its as-cast condition and after various pre-service heat treatments, aiming to fully identify and quantify the microstructural changes. These findings are then compared with predictions from thermodynamic equilibrium calculations using a dedicated Ni alloy database. The research reveals that variations in heat treatment conditions can significantly affect the microstructure development in Haynes 282, potentially impacting its mechanical properties.

Ni-38Cr-3.8Al has high hardness and high corrosion resistance with good hot workability, and therefore, it has been applied on various applications. However, in order to expand further application, it is important to understand the high temperature properties. Then, this study focused on the high temperature properties such as thermal phase stability, hardness, tensile property, creep property and hot corrosion resistance. As the result of studies, we found that the thermal phase stability of (γ/α-Cr) lamellar structure and the high temperature properties were strongly influenced by the temperature. Although the high temperature properties, except for creep property, of Ni-38Cr-3.8Al were superior to those of conventional Ni-based superalloys, the properties were dramatically degraded beyond 973 K. This is because the lamellar structure begins to collapse around 973 K due to the thermal stability of the lamellar structure. The hot corrosion resistance of Ni-38Cr-3.8Al was superior to that of conventional Ni-based superalloys, however, the advantage disappeared around 1073 K. These results indicate that Ni-38Cr-3.8Al is capable as a heat resistant material which is required the hot corrosion resistance rather than a heat resistant material with high strength at high temperature.

Low thermal expansion precipitation strengthening Ni-base superalloy, Ni-20Cr-10Mo-1.2Al-1.6Ti alloy (USC141TM), was developed for 700°C class A-USC steam turbine material by Hitachi, Ltd and Hitachi Metals, Ltd. USC141 is usually solution treated and then aged to increase high temperature strength for turbine blades and bolts. As the estimated 105h creep rupture strength at 700°C is about 180MPa, USC141 could also be expected to apply for boiler tubes. On the other hand, this alloy seems to be only solution treated to apply for boiler tubes because tubes are usually jointed by welding and bended by cold working and thus tube alloys should have low hardness before welding and bending and should be used as solution treated. In this study, the creep properties of USC141 as solution treated was evaluated, and the results and microstructures after creep tests were compared with those as aged. As a result, USC141 as solution treated exhibited almost as same creep rupture properties as that as aged because precipitation at grain boundaries and in grains gradually increased at testing temperatures around 700°C. Furthermore seamless tubes of USC141 were produced and various properties including creep properties are now being evaluated.

A modified version of Alloy 706, designated FENIX-700, was developed using the CALPHAD method to improve high-temperature stability above 700°C. The new alloy features reduced Nb and increased Al content, relying on γ' (Ni 3 Al) strengthening while eliminating γ'' (Ni 3 Nb), δ, and η phases. This modification improved both creep temperature capability (from 650°C to 700°C) and segregation properties. Successful manufacturing trials included a 760 mm² forging shaft using triple melt processing and a 1050 mm ESR ingot, demonstrating industrial viability. The study also explores compatible Ni-base welding materials for joining FENIX-700 to 12% Cr ferritic steel in 700°C class steam turbine applications.

Cold working and bending during boiler manufacturing can induce strain hardening in austenitic stainless steel, potentially compromising creep ductility and leading to premature failures during operation. While design codes like ASME I, PG 19 provide guidelines for maximum strain levels before solution treating is required, industry concerns suggest these limits may be too high, prompting some boiler manufacturers to implement more conservative thresholds. This study examined the creep ductility of four austenitic stainless steels (TP310HCbN, XA704, TX304HB, and Sanicro 25) at prior strain levels of 12% and 15%, with Sanicro 25 demonstrating the highest ductility, followed by TX304HB, XA704, and TP310HCbN. Solution annealing successfully restored creep ductility to exceed 10% elongation in all materials, though this treatment may be necessary at strains of 12% and 15% for all materials except Sanicro 25 to ensure adequate creep ductility. The findings suggest that ASME I PG 19 guidelines for austenitic stainless steels containing Cb, V, and N should be reviewed, as lower strain limits could help reduce strain-induced precipitation hardening failures.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a process where, as the name suggests, material is added during production, in contrast to techniques such as machining, where material is removed. With metals, AM processes involve localised melting of a powder or wire in specific locations to produce a part, layer by layer. AM techniques have recently been applied to the repair of gas turbine blades. These components are often produced from nickel-based superalloys, a group of materials which possess excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures. However, although the microstructural and mechanical property evolution during the high temperature exposure of conventionally produced superalloy materials is reasonably well understood, the effects of prolonged high temperature exposure on AM material are less well known. This research is concerned with the microstructures of components produced using AM techniques and an examination of the effect of subsequent high temperature exposures. In particular, the paper will focus on the differences between cast and SLM IN939 as a function of heat treatment and subsequent ageing, including differences in grain structure and precipitate size, distribution and morphology, quantified using advanced electron microscopy techniques.

Along with rapid development of thermal power industry in mainland China, problems in metal materials of fossil power units also change quickly. Through efforts, problems such as bursting due to steam side oxide scale exfoliation and blocking of boiler tubes, and finned tube weld cracking of low alloy steel water wall have been solved basically or greatly alleviated. However, with rapid promotion of capacity and parameters of fossil power units, some problems still occur occasionally or have not been properly solved, such as weld cracks of larger-dimension thick-wall components, and water wall high temperature corrosion after low-nitrogen combustion retrofitting.

Haynes 282 is a great candidate to meet advanced ultra-super-critical (A-USC) steam conditions in modern coal-fired power plants. The standard 2-step aging treatment has been designed for optimizing microstructure therefore providing excellent mechanical properties. We studied an alternative, more economical, 1-step aging treatment and compared microstructure, tensile properties at 750˚C and deformation behavior. Moreover, three cooling rates from the solution temperature were studied to simulate large-scale components conditions. We found that as much as about 20% of fine spherical intragranular γ' particles were successfully precipitated in all cases. Their average size increased as the cooling rate decreased. All four heat-treated alloys exhibited good mechanical properties at 750˚C with a yield strength well over 620MPa. As expected, the yield strength increased and the ductility decreased as the average γ' size decreased. The alloys exhibited a mixed mode of deformation, though the dominant deformation mechanism depended on the different γ' characteristics. The major operative deformation mechanism could be well predicted by strength increment calculations based on the precipitation strengthening model. Our results suggest that wrought Haynes 282 produced by a more economical 1-step aging treatment may be a reliable candidate for high temperature applications under A-USC conditions.

The creep strength and ductility of Grade P22 steel (2¼ Cr) was measured at 600°C under standard uniaxial tensile conditions at 150MPa. Test specimens were prepared by solution heat treatment at austenitization temperatures ranging from 900°C - 1200°C followed by normalization at 900°C before continuous air cooling to room temperature. In addition to specimens tested in the solution treated state, creep tests were also performed after tempering. The variable austenitization temperatures gave rise to different prior austenite grain (PAG) sizes, which in turn influenced the crystallographic packet and block boundary misorientation angle distribution. The latter parameters were measured using electron backscattered diffraction which also allowed partial reconstruction of the PAG boundaries. The time to creep failure at 600°C increased as function of PAG size up to approximately 70µm, but significantly decreased when the average prior austenite grain size measured approximately 108 µm. However, the minimum creep rate decreased even up to the largest PAG size with corresponding decrease in creep ductility. The stability of the crystallographic packet and block boundaries influences the high strength-low ductility for the large PAGs in comparison to the dominant effect of PAG boundaries at the smallest grain size where extensive recovery and recrystallization reduces creep strength.

The A286 is one of the earliest superalloys developed. It has been used for manufacturing different components of turbo machineries because of its balanced high temperature properties. These components include shafts, discs, spacers, blades and fasteners. This paper reviews some of the issues and recent field experiences related to metallurgy, fabrication, in-service evaluation and failure of some of these components. The fabrication aspects including the effects of alloy melting processes, forging parameters and different types of heat treatments on the processed parts are discussed. The importance of these factors on the microstructure and properties of A286 are highlighted. The effects of service exposure on some of these parts are also discussed. In service evaluation involves checking for service induced damage or changes in microstructures and properties so that the suitability of the part for continued service can be determined. The failure analysis section of the paper briefly discusses failures of two expander wheels and an expander disc made out of A286 to pinpoint some of the salient features of damage accumulation and fracture during service.
