Atlas 303 is a free-machining austenitic stainless steel. It is primarily used when production involves extensive machining in automatic screw machines. The sulfur addition which is responsible for the improved machining and galling characteristics of Atlas 303 lowers its corrosion resistance to below that of type 304 austenitic stainless steel. Compared with the other austenitic grades, Atlas 303 has excellent toughness, although its sulfur content reduces its toughness slightly. ELKONITE 20S, 30S, 35S, 40S, 45S, 50S, 4050, and 2088 are tungsten-silver compositions with the tungsten content ranging from 50-88 wt.%. Tungsten has the highest strength and the highest melting temperature of the refractory metals. This is the principal factor in determining resistance of a contact to arc erosion and mechanical wear. ELKONITE G17, G18, 7065, and 7165 silver silver alloys contain molybdenum as the refractory metal. Molybdenum has a lower density than tungsten and is less resistant to arc erosion. Molybdenum-silver Elkonites exhibit self-cleaning properties when subjected to arching during switching. The arc breaks down the molybdenum oxide at temperatures above 795 degrees C (1465 degrees F). This helps maintain low contact resistance. The molybdenum-silver Elkonites are susceptible to corrosion in high atmospheres and are not recommended where they will encounter this type of environment.
