USS 18-8 Mo (AISI Type 316) is an iron-chromium-nickel alloy with superior resistance to corrosion because of an addition of 2 to 3% molybdenum. It is formable and weldable. It has good creep strength and is very well suited for high-temperature applications that require relatively high strengths up to 1500 F. It resists corrosion from a wide variety of chemicals and is highly resistant to oxidation to 1650 F. EASTERN STAINLESS TYPE 304L is the basic 18-8 chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel with a very low carbon content (0.03% max.). Its general resistance to corrosion is similar to AISI Type 304 but, because of its low carbon content, it has superior resistance to the formation of harmful carbides that indirectly contribute to intergranular corrosion. It is recommended for most articles of welded construction. Postweld annealing is not necessary.
