J and L type 405 has marginal stainless corrosion resistance. It is used primarily as a structural material. It is serviceable in continuous service up to 704 C (1300 F) and in intermittent exposures up to 816 degrees Celsius (1500 degrees Fahrenheit). It does not harden appreciably when air cooled from high temperatures where some austenite can exist. It is used in structural parts that are not annealed after welding. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as creep. It also includes information on high temperature performance and corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, and joining. Filing Code: SS-749. Producer or source: J & L Specialty Steel Inc.

for article titled, CARPENTER STAINLESS TYPE 405: Nonhardenable Stainless Steel
CARPENTER STAINLESS TYPE 405 is a 12% chromium stainless steel that does not harden appreciably. It was designed to allow its use in the as-welded condition. It is particularly desirable for welded applications which require finish machining. It has moderate tensile strength (70,000 psi) in the fully annealed condition and resists corrosion in mild environments. It is used for parts and structures that cannot be annealed after welding. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, and joining. Filing Code: SS-395. Producer or source: Carpenter.

for article titled, UNILOY 405: Non Hardenable Stainless Steel
UNILOY 405 is a non-hardening modification of the 12% chromium stainless steel, AISI Type 410. A small addition of aluminum (about 0.20%) restricts the formation of austenite at high temperature so that hardening does not occur upon quenching. This characteristic makes Uniloy 405 especially suited for welding; the welds are ductile and there is no need for controlled cooling rates. Applications of Uniloy 405 include all types of welded structures that cannot be annealed after welding. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, joining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: SS-402. Producer or source: Cyclops.

for article titled, ALLEGHENY STAINLESS TYPE 405: 12 Cr Ferritic Steel
ALLEGHENY STAINLESS Type 405, unlike most other 12% chromium steels, is not subject to appreciable hardening through air cooling from high temperatures. This is an advantageous characteristic in those applications where a soft, ductile material is required after rapid cooling from above the critical temperature. The nonhardening tendency of Type 405 also retards the formation of hardening cracks where welding is employed. Its uses include annealing boxes and baffles where hardening during cooling would be undesirable. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on high temperature performance and corrosion resistance as well as heat treating and machining. Filing Code: SS-461. Producer or source: Allegheny Ludlum Corporation.
