CarTech 303 is a free-machining austenitic stainless steel. The addition of sulfur to this 18-8 chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel, which is ordinarily tough and difficult to machine, enhances the alloy’s machinability to the degree that it can be readily utilized for producing parts on automatic screw machines at about 70% of the speed of SAE 1212. This sulfur modification has led to widespread acceptance and use of this grade in the screw machine industry. UNILOY 303 and 303Se are improved machinability grades of 18-8 general purpose austenitic stainless steels. Machinability is respectively improved by additions of sulfur or selenium. Whereas standard 18-8 stainless steel had a machinability rating about 40-50% that of AISI B1112 free-machining carbon steel, these steels have a rating of about 70% that of AISI B1112. UNILOY 303Se is preferred over UNILOY 303 where machined finish and good cold formability and corrosion resistance are desired. Atlas 303 is a free-machining austenitic stainless steel. It is primarily used when production involves extensive machining in automatic screw machines. The sulfur addition which is responsible for the improved machining and galling characteristics of Atlas 303 lowers its corrosion resistance to below that of type 304 austenitic stainless steel. Compared with the other austenitic grades, Atlas 303 has excellent toughness, although its sulfur content reduces its toughness slightly. UGIMA NSU and UGIMA 303 are the same grades designated differently for the European and North American markets, respectively. They are resulfurized grades with calcium added.
