AISI 4137 is a medium-carbon low-alloy steel suitable for heavy-duty service. It is nominally an oil-hardening steel; however, it may be water hardened if suitable precautions are taken to avoid cracking. Its many uses include axles, fittings, gears, crankshafts and nitrided parts. It has a low tendency to develop temper embrittlement. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, joining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: SA-366. Producer or source: Alloy steel mills and foundries.

CABOT ESR 4140 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel produced by electric-furnace melting, vacuum degassing and electroslag remelting by use of small-heat-size technology. Electroslag refining improves cleanliness and lowers the sulfur content to provide improved isotropy, ductility and toughness. Cabot ESR 4140 has outstanding fatigue strength and a good combination of strength and ductility. Its applications range from gas turbines to oil-field equipment. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness and fatigue. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, joining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: SA-371. Producer or source: Cabot Corporation, Machinery Division.

AISI 4147 is a medium-carbon alloys steel with relatively high hardenability. It has good resistance to abrasion, fatigue and impact and is recommended for moderately severe service. It is an oil-hardening grade; however, it may be water hardened if suitable precautions are taken to minimize the danger of cracking during quenching. It has a relatively low tendency for the development of temper embrittlement during tempering in the range 850-1 100 H. Typical applications comprise gears, shafting, machine-tool parts, clutch parts and connecting rods. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, joining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: SA-419. Producer or source: Alloy steel mills and foundries.
