MAXITE is a tungsten-cobalt-vanadium high-speed tool steel. It is best used when maximum chip removal with single-point cutting tools is of primary importance. Tools made from Maxite will cut tough and hard materials such as stainless steels and hardened alloy steels with relative ease. It is excellent for cutting weld flashings and gritty, scaly hard castings. Among its many applications are drills, lathe tools, planer tools, cutoff tools and roll-turning tools. This datasheet provides information on composition and hardness. It also includes information on wear resistance as well as forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-461. REX AA is the original 18-4-1 high-speed steel, having been first introduced in the early 1990s. Melting practice and processing have been improved since that time, but nevertheless it is so properly balanced and the fundamental characteristics so sound, that it is still a standard, general-purpose high-speed steel. REX AA has a wide hardening range. This steel is less susceptible to soft skin during hardening than other types and has good red hardness and toughness. Among its many applications are boring tools, broaches, cutters, drills, gear cutters, lathe tools and woodworking knives. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-426. Producer or source: Crucible Specialty Metals Division, Colt Industries.

GUTERL T-1 is a general-purpose high-speed steel that is suitable for practically all high-speed applications. It is relatively easy to fabricate. This steel has been the standard of the industry for many years because of its excellent combination of cutting ability and toughness, ease of heat treatment and minimum tendency to decarburize. Its many uses include drills, taps, broaches, hobs, lathe and planer tools, milling cutters and wood-working tools. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. UNICUT 2 is a high-carbon, high-vanadium, molybdenum-type of high-speed steel. The high carbon and vanadium contents provide higher resistance to abrasion when compared with other standard high-speed steels; however, this is accomplished at a slight loss in machinability and grind-ability. In many cases, this is considered to be of minor consequence where better wear resistance is required. Typical applications include drills, reamers, milling cutters, broaches and wood-working tools. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, and hardness. It also includes information on high temperature performance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: TS-406. Producer or source: Cyclops Corporation.

CPM REX 20 is the second in a family of super high-speed steels made without cobalt. (For the first one, see CPM REX 25, Alloy Digest TS-365, July 1980.) CPM REX 20 is comparable to the AISI Type 40 series of high-speed steels, particularly AISI Type 42, in heat-treating response and tool performance. CPM REX 20 is designed for use in machining operations requiring heavy cuts, high speeds and feeds, and for difficult-to-machine materials that are high in hardness and abrasion resistance. Typical applications are boring tools, drills, gear cutters and punches. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. Filing Code: TS-398. Producer or source: Crucible Specialty Metals Division, Colt Industries.

AISI Type T5 is a tungsten high-speed steel to which cobalt (8.9%) is added to provide high and unusual red hardness. It is particularly well adapted for heavy-duty cutting and high-production cutting tools. Because of its high red hardness, a cutting edge can be maintained under conditions of speed, feed and depth of cut that would not be possible with ordinary high-speed steels. Typical applications of AISI Type T5 are lathe and planer tools, reamers, milling cutters and twist drills for heavy-duty cutting. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, and hardness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: TS-389. Producer or source: Tool steel mills.

VASCO M-7 is a molybdenum type of high-speed steel having tungsten, chromium and molybdenum contents similar to AISI Type MI high-speed steel, but with higher carbon and vanadium. The increased percentages of carbon and vanadium add to the cutting efficiency of the steel without materially lessening the toughness. This steel has met with considerable favor among high-speed steel users who are seeking improved cutting properties for specific applications. Its many applications include drills, end mills, milling cutters, punches and shear blades. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: TS-379. Producer or source: Teledyne Vasco.

CARPENTER STAR MAX is a general-purpose, molybdenum-bearing, high-speed steel containing a low percentage of tungsten. It is produced by the ESR (Electroslag Refining) process to provide a cutting steel with as great a toughness as any other high-speed steel. Star Max can be used successfully for fine-edged tools and for tools that must be ground with sharp angles where danger of edge crumbling or chipping is pronounced. Typical applications comprise blanking dies, drills, milling cutters and punches. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, machining, and surface treatment. Filing Code: TS-374. Producer or source: Carpenter.
