SAE 1078 is high-carbon steel of low hardenability. It can be hardened by quenching from the austenitizing temperature into oil or water; care must be exercised to prevent cracking when quenching into water. This steel develops high surface hardness and a soft core on quenching and tempering lightly. It has good wear resistance. Its many uses include agricultural equipment, tools, springs and machinery parts. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties. It also includes information on corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, machining, and joining. Filing Code: CS-83. Producer or source: Carbon steel mills.
